Top Tips for Wedding Confetti Photos
One of my favorite moments of a wedding day is the confetti toss. It's a fun, festive, and colorful way to get your guests involved. Your loved ones showering you with confetti creates magical and picturesque photos that'll look amazing on your wall (or Instagram!). As a wedding photographer, I have seen (and captured) my fair share of confetti shots. Here are my top tips for the most enjoyable and stunning confetti photos on your wedding day.
When you think you've got enough confetti- double it!
1. Choose the Right Confetti for Your Wedding
Select confetti that compliments your wedding theme and colours. Vibrant colours make the photos pop while neutral colours look classy and elegant.
Choosing biodegradable confetti is a no-brainer to minimize environmental impact. The most eco-friendly option would be petals or dried plants. Following that would be tissue paper confetti that creates an amazing scene as it slowly flutters down. With tissue paper, you have the option of choosing the shape from circles to hearts to something more personalized. If you have the patience, you can totally DIY tissue paper confetti - just make sure to do a lot of it! When you think you've got enough confetti, double it! The larger the surface area and lighter it is, the longer it'll be up in the air for. Larger pieces are also easier to clean up - your venue will thank you!

2. Coordinate with Your Photographer
Ensure your photographer is aware of when and where the confetti toss will happen so they know where best to position themselves to capture the moment. Communication is always key!
I find that right after the ceremony is the best time for the confetti. Everyone is in one place, and it's the perfect time for your guests to celebrate you and your partner. The lighting will also hopefully be nice and bright. Natural light is best, but don't worry if you have to go inside due to rain or wind - a good photographer should be able to make the most out of all lighting conditions. Although it can't hurt to discuss a backup plan with your photographer!
Consider the angle from which you would like the confetti shot captured. In front as you walk forward is usually best, but your photographer may be open to something different if you have a specific shot in mind.
3. Plan the Toss
Consider choosing a location that offers a clear, open space. A garden path or entrance to your venue often works well and can easily be segued into part of the day, e.g., as you leave the ceremony area/venue or walk back down the aisle. Don't forget to consider any restrictions the venue may have regarding confetti.
Have someone with a loud voice (and preferably extroverted) ready to brief guests as they hand out the confetti so everyone knows when and how to throw. Guests throwing the confetti upwards rather than pummeling it directly at you creates a showering effect that allows the confetti to fall gracefully around you. Think 'waterfall not snowball'.
